Dr. Christine Spence is a Clinical Psychologist licensed to practice in the State of New York and Florida. She works with people from all races, ethnicity, and cultural backgrounds. She obtained her doctorate degree (Psy.D) from the California School of Professional Psychology. Dr. Spence has worked in a variety of institutions: Prisons, Schools, Hospitals, Group Homes, Assisted Living, Nursing Homes, and Private Practice. In addition, to working in a variety of institutions Dr. Spence has served both the young and the aged.

Dr. Spence is a Cognitive Behavioral Psychologist. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy has received empirical support for its efficacy in the treatment of a variety of clinical and non-clinical problems including but not limited to mood disorders and anxiety disorder. Dr. Spence’s approach aims to influence dysfunctional emotions, behaviors and cognitions through a goal-oriented, systemic procedure. She identifies and monitors thoughts, assumptions, beliefs and behaviors that are related and accompany debilitating negative emotions that are inaccurate or simply unhelpful. HOW LONG AND HOW MANY TIMES A WEEK IS A TYPICAL SESSION? Sessions are usually 45-60 minutes. Most clients are seen once per week. However, the number of sessions depends on what your current needs are.

HOW LONG WILL I BE IN COUNSELING? The length of time a client is in counseling depends on the nature of the problem and the goals of the counseling. Some clients have a very specific problem that can be worked through in a set course for a short period of time. For others, counseling is an ongoing learning process and they choose to receive counseling for a longer period.

WHAT IF I WANT COUPLES COUNSELING BUT MY PARTNER WON'T COME? DO YOU TAKE INSURANCE AND WHAT ARE YOUR FEES?
Yes, Dr. Spence is on several insurance panels. You can discuss her cash rate and any other billing related question via email or phone.

DO I NEED TO TAKE MEDICATION?
As a Psychologist in New York Dr. Spence is not legally permitted to prescribe medications. However, based on a joint assessment of problems you are facing, it may be advisable to consult with a Psychiatrist or Primary Care Physician to determine whether medication is warranted.
